All personnel identified on the application--including faculty, staff, students, and collaborators from other institutions conducting activities with nonhuman vertebrate animals at Appalachian State are required to complete the following:
1. Online training for lab animal welfare
The online training for lab animal welfare is from the University of Miami's Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Download instructions for registering for CITI (PDF).
Student Personnel Must Complete:
- Investigators, Staff and Students (ID: 27752)
- Species-specific modules (Mice, Rats, Zebrafish, Amphibians, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rabbits)
Faculty Advisor Must Complete:
- Investigators, Staff and Students (ID: 27752)
- Species-specific modules (Mice, Rats, Zebrafish, Amphibians, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rabbits)
Member of the IACUC Must Complete:
- IACUC Chairs, Members, and Coordinators (ID: 27753)
Link Completed Training from Another Institution to Appalachian State:
- If you are a researcher who completed CITI training at another institution, you should affiliate your profile with Appalachian State so that we can verify your training. Download instructions for affiliating with another institution (PDF).
**Species-Specific Modules Not Covered in CITI:**
- The modules in ASULearn are specific to the species with which you'll be working. If your species is available in CITI, use that module. If not, please use the training available on our ASULearn Site. Please email iacuc@appstate.edufor questions or additional information.

- Students/Researchers can self-enroll in ASULearn using a single use “course key” available from a PI or the IACUC administrator (IACUC@appstate.edu).
2. Occupational Health and Safety Training
These forms can be found in the Forms section on the left hand tab labeled "IACUC Forms".
NOTE: The IACUC will not approve an IACUC protocol until the required online CITI training has been completed for all individuals identified on the application--including faculty, staff, students, and collaborators from other institutions conducting activities with nonhuman vertebrate animals at Appalachian State University. (Effective July 1, 2014, the requirement will also include species specific OHS training.)
Any personnel added to the protocol after IACUC approval must complete "Working with the IACUC" before handling any live vertebrate animals. (Effective July 1, 2014, the requirement will also include species specific OHS training.)
